Community Outreach
Where Caring is Our Calling
Cumberland Family Medical Center, Inc. is pleased to be an active part of each community we serve. Through various partnerships with local, county, regional, and state agencies, we are fortunate to be able to expand our role as health care providers through the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices, educational opportunities, and in continuing efforts to improve over-all conditions within our communities.
Preventative Oral Health Services
We are pleased to provide preventative oral healthcare and oral health education to preschool - 12th graders at their schools with parental permission. On site oral healthcare delivery reduces time missed from class for appointments and parents’ time away from work while increasing access to dental care. Each student participating in our dental program receives a comprehensive exam, cleaning, fluoride treatment, and, if needed, sealants and x-rays. Parents receive a “Report Card” detailing the findings of the exam and suggesting follow-up with the child’s family dentist if needed.
The local Family Resource & Youth Services Centers are instrumental in assisting our staff with the provision of our school-based dental services. By coordinating our efforts through these hardworking individuals, our licensed dentists and qualified dental staff make an easy entry into schools without disruption of academic instruction. In addition to the preventative dental services, we also include a needed educational component that brings our oral health staff into classrooms to speak to students about the dangers of tobacco use, the advantages of good oral health habits, and the proper way to care for their teeth. Our goal is to increase awareness of oral health care and its impact on a healthy lifestyle.
Reach Out & Read
Cumberland Family Medical Center, Inc. partners with Reach Out & Read, a national early literacy program that targets children. At each regular checkup, from newborn to ten years of age, children receive from their provider, a new, age appropriate book to take home. Providers and nurses speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children to promote language development and early literacy skills. By age ten, children will have received a library of 15-17 books. CFMC, Inc. is excited to assist in the creation of young leaders in our communities with a life-long love of reading.
Scrubby Bear & Mr. Molar
Our “Scrubby Bear” program is very popular among elementary students. Scrubby Bear enjoys visiting students and teaching them the importance of proper hand washing methods to avoid transferring germs that cause flu, colds, and other illnesses.
Our “Mr. Molar” program is instrumental in educating younger children on how to make their teeth last a life time. Mr. Molar talks with students about what foods are better for strong, healthy teeth and the harm that sugary drinks can do to teeth if not brushed and taken care of properly.

Community Outreach is also extended through partnerships with local health departments, extension offices, libraries, and other civic organizations.
