Cumberland Family Medical Center Promotes National Literacy Program
Cumberland Family Medical Center, Inc. (CFMC) is pleased to announce its participation in Reach Out & Read, a national early literacy program. With every regularly scheduled well child exam at CFMC clinics, children ages six months to ten years receive a brand new age appropriate book, resulting in a child having a library of 10-15 books by age ten. Reach Out and Read shares the importance of reading and language development by using the positive influence of local health care providers to educate parents about language, brain development, and reading.
CFMC has distributed over 6,000 new books across their service area this year. The program continues to grow and has recently expanded to women’s health locations in Danville and Frankfort. Mothers receive a new book for their child at their 20-week prenatal visit.
Russell Family Medical Center Pediatrician Dr. Holly Von Gruenigen was instrumental in bringing the program to CFMC. A Russell County native and graduate of Russell County High and Pikeville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Von Gruenigen began her career as a teacher in the Russell County school system prior to becoming a physician. Her enthusiasm for language development and reading has been key in the program’s success.
“Reach Out & Read is very proud to have Cumberland Family Medical Center as a partner in promoting literacy in Kentucky. Dr. Holly Von Gruenigen is a great medical champion, she has a passion for reading and for the program,” stated Gwen Cobb, Assistant Program Director for Reach Out & Read in Kentucky, during a recent site visit to Russell Family Medical Center.
CFMC providers and staff throughout their service area will be reading books to children during upcoming family reading nights in local schools and children’s story hours in local libraries.
